Churches Need To Continue To Provide Hope Through Worship And Community Service PDF Print E-mail
WHITTIER, CA (ANS) -- As the Senior Pastor of a mid-size church a few miles east of Los Angeles, I am daily reminded of the affects our current economy is having upon our community and church body.

These uncertain times are impacting everyone - no one is immune. However, for those of us with faith, the pain and stresses do not have to be as great, as we've anchored ourselves in the surest footing available - trusting in our Lord's care.

These are definitely trying times and our church, Whittier Area Community Church (WACC), has given more financial aid in one month ($26,000) from its benevolent fund, than it was asked to give since my first year at the Church in 1996. And I believe we're just seeing the first effects of this downturn - experts are saying that this recession could last up to three years.

This Easter I preached the message of "hope" and I was encouraged to see how many other Pastors did as well. This message is something that needs to continue well after Easter for we have to keep focusing our congregations on the fact that God is in charge; that our money is His money; that our future is His future; that He is the one true certainty in uncertainty.

Our Church's mission statement is "Follow God - Love People" and as followers of Christ, we need to be there for those struggling in these financial times. As every business and household is being creative with limited funds, so are we. Our creativity has led us to opening our doors every week for prayer. Every Wednesday morning, anyone can come and pray for their needs, our country, our state, our leaders, our neighbors and our church. We believe that prayer makes a difference and we are committed to pray without ceasing.

We also have just finished serving our community by completing more than 125 projects that helped local non-profits, public service agencies, schools, homeless shelters and residents. Over 1200 church members volunteered their time and resources one weekend, spreading "hope" throughout the community.

We're doing everything we responsibly can to relieve the emotional toil brought on by the fears of unemployment and financial security. We strongly believe that the church body can make a difference and so can you - we are all called to serve through any possible means - i.e. donating, volunteering, praying. We hope that you are making a difference in someone's life and providing "hope" to them during these difficult times.
